Feeling crunchy

I'm NOT a crunchy person by nature. However, I do enjoy saving money and have gotten interested in being as non-consumer as possible, though I do still have a long way to go. However, I don't do it be green, I do it to save green...as because it's a fun kind of challenge.

A couple of weeks ago I made a bed for Ace. I'm at the library now so I don't have a way to put up pics, but I took one of the old cushions from the couch we re-did last year and an old blanket and made a cover. I used velcro on one end so it can be easily removed for washing. He LOVES it.

I've also started some pj's for the Peanuts from some old flannel sheets our neighbor gave us. Now that the basement is cleaned out and organized I have my sewing machine and other supplies down there so I'm better able to get sewing done without planning a while day for it so I can clean up the bedroom. I can work until time to fix a meal and just leave it there in its place. Yeah!

Baba has enjoyed being home and is replacing tools that were stolen while we were gone and buying stuff he's been wanting. I swear the man is addicted to Craigslist. He's also been getting things set up for the new business. It's been so nice having him home. There have been adjustments to make after being used to going it alone but I was really expecting more fights...we're both strong-willed. But we're really enjoying the time together and while I miss my alone time, I enjoy having him around much more. Besides, I always have a corner in the basement to hide. ;)

Oh, and our chickens (which we've added to considerably in the last month) have been laying like crazy. We have eggs everyday for breakfast and sometimes lunch or supper. We're getting creative with our recipes. Such a nice problem to have.

My husband lost his job in March 2010. Long story, we're living in a 20%-unemployed city and he started his own business last year. We are just now drawing a paycheck (!) and it is so much fun, but scary, too.

I have always gardened (since 10 or so, in 4-H), but this year my intention is to grow all our veggies for winter (freeze peas and green beans and zucchini and summer squash) and make and preserve all our pasta sauce, diced tomatoes, and salsa.

The organizing and cleaning endeavor hasn't been going well, though :(

Thanks for following my blog! I look forward to hearing more about your crunchy endeavors.
