Food for thought

I remember many years ago during the Murphy Brown/single mom debate when Dan Quayle was asked about what he would do if his daughter found herself pregnant without being married. He answered very firmly that that wouldn't happen. The interviewer thought he was being arrogant and tried to get him to answer the question, "But what if?" Quayle knew the answer to that question. He and his wife were raising their daughter in such a way that they knew it was a moot point. He wasn't being arrogant. He wasn't implying that he knew every thought his girl had. He was speaking as a parent who knew what he was teaching his children and that they were taking it to heart. It caused quite a stir. He was out of touch. He was stupid. What did he know? His daughter.

Barack Obama made the remark that if his daughters made a mistake, he didn't want them punished with a baby.

A father who is taking the time to teach his daughter right from wrong and is sure of his daughter's character is mocked for being foolish and gullible. A father who makes no assumptions of his daughters' characters is basically ignored. Kind of makes me glad I'm living overseas.
